Kirby is probably my favorite, and 85% of Minnesotans favorite, athlete of all time. Its too bad he never got to clear his name or redeem himself after all those allegations. But I kind of see that as someone trying to get famous off of someone else's mistake, and the media totally exploiting it out of proportion. I think he handled the whole situation with dignity, though. Kirby definately brought more joy and excitement to Minnesota than any other sports figure, at least in my lifetime. Hats off to you, Kirby.

Does anyone remember when David Letterman did his show in Minneapolis? If not, here's the Top Ten List from that episode:
Top Ten Ways to Mispronounce Kirby Puckett

10. Kooby Pickett

9. Creepy Pockets

8. Bernie Crumpet

7. Turkey Bucket

6. Buddy Hackett

5. The Puckett Formerly Known as Kirby

4. Punky Brewster

3. Kent Hrbek

2. What the fuck Kappa!? You totally let Tau Beta steal Band-Aid. Sure, the initial try was a disaster, but that's because of bad timing and way over budget. But everyone that attented had fun, and its still an awesome idea.

I went to the Illinois/Gopher basketball game last week. Thanks, trombones, for playing Indians-Halftime. That's my favorite. Whenever Blaser would let me direct, I would call Indians-Halftime.

I bought the album, The Kinks 'Are the Village Green Preservation Society'. It completely blew me away! I don't think an album has had this kind of affect on me in a long time, if ever. Its Sgt. Pepper's, Highway 61, and Bookends all rolled into one. Simply perfect.

Friday, February 10, 2006

The XX Winter Olympic Games start today. I'm super excited. I took a half day off work today just to get ready. The 'Summon the Heroes' CD is blasting in the background while I write this. We're having an Opening Ceremony party tonight at our house. If you are a first-tier friend and didn't get an e-vite, this can be your invitation. It should be miraculous.

Here's an old favorite:
Top 5 List(s) of the Day:
Top 5 Favorite Sporting Events
1. Ice hockey
5. Freestyle Moguls
Honorable Mention: Snowboardcross - it looks pretty awesome but is new this year.

Monday, February 06, 2006

Minnesota has more athletes going to the Winter Olympics this year than any other state with 31 (based on birthplace). New York is a distant second with 19. The rest of America sucks at winter.

Compared to Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones suck at Super Bowl halftimes.

Monday, January 02, 2006

The trip to Nashville KICKED ASS. Nashville is probably the best city in America to go bar-hopping. We went to an Irish pub, blues joint, cowboy bar, and the Beer Sellar in one night and all within a half-mile of each other. And all these places had live music to fit the ambiance; the Beer Sellar had an acoustic duo. But we probably went a little over-board. When you puke in the stands of the stadium the next day, you know it was a good night. (Sorry Zalec, I had to say it cause it was so bad ass.) Thanks Zalec and Jungkunz for an awesome night.

Too bad the game wasn't equally awesome. Two of the worst calls all season absolutely cost us the game and exemplify Mason's tenure. Not attempting the field goal before the half was a terrible call. If the game comes down to a field goal at the end, which it should have, you at least give your place kicker some actual playing time. If he made it, that would have been a 6-point swing. Even if he misses it, he has that feel for the end of the game. But if you want to go for it on 4th and 7 with 35 seconds left, at least do a running play. That way, if you don't make it, you probably take twice as much time off the clock as opposed to a pass play.

And the last play of the game was an atrocious call. You have 45 seconds and 3 downs to set-up a field goal. If you want to take a shot at the endzone on first down, that's a good call. But don't bring three receivers with three defenders to the same spot for a jump ball. Unbelievable.

Why the University is satisfied with mediocracy and extended Mason's contract, I can't understand. I think this guy sitting near us at the game summed it up precisely. With Mason, we'll never be bad, but we'll never be good.

Thursday, December 15, 2005

Did you hear Bob Dylan will be hosting his own show on XM Satellite Radio? HUZZAH!!!
I know earlier this season I vowed only to attend a bowl if it were the Alamo Bowl or greater, but I lied. I thought about it, and on paper it seems better to go to a bigger bowl, but once you get there it really doesn't matter. And actually, I can't think of any better city to go to a bowl game than Nashville, except maybe San Antonio. The stadium kind of sucks, but its right across the river from downtown. And a sweet downtown at that. And if I were too proud to attend just because its a lesser bowl, I would just be fulfilling the self-fulfilling prophecy that Minnesota doesn't travel well. So prophecy be damned. Music City Bowl or bust! Needless to say I'm excited. ROADTRIP!?!
Seriously, if any of you out there in blogdom want to go to the game that aren't in band, let me know. Let me know soon though so we can start to plan something. Maybe I'll send out an e-vite.

Friday, December 02, 2005

Not much to update. Just wanted to post how much I LOVE winter. I just got in from shoveling, but after I finished, I sat on the front stoop soaking it all in for a while. Sometime I like to lie in the snow like regular people like to lie in the sun.
